Another”first” in the books for Sandy and I this weekend! Although I had provided entertainment (in my past life as a mobile DJ) for the previous iteration of this run (originally called the “Thump Day 5k”). This was the first year I had participated as a runner, and am glad I did.
The Thumpin’ 5K benefits The Luling Animal Welfare Society (LAWS), a 501(C)3, Non-Profit Corporation formed to work with the City of Luling Animal Control to benefit lost, seized and abandoned animals within the City of Luling. The money raised via race entries and donations, helps support the organization’s adoption programs, and helps them care for the animals housed at the shelter. LAWS has cared for and successfully placed hundreds of Dogs and Cats that would otherwise have been euthanized. Makes my running 3.1 miles seem a small penance.
This is a fairly small event, but was very well run by volunteers from LAWS. Runners received a cool t-shirt, and awards were given for 1st and 2nd place in male and female age groups. Two on course aid stations (water) were available for runners (actually one that you passed twice, since part of this course was a loop), as was fruit and cold water at the finish line. Chip timing was provided by the fine folks from All Sports Timing, who also did a great job, and were more than helpful when a few timing issues arose. The course was a mixture of gravel road/trail, and grass sections… definitely not a road run, but I wouldn’t say it was rough enough to qualify as a trail run either… let’s just call it cross country. The weather was hot and humid, even with a 7:30 AM start time. It’s Texas in June… surprise! But we did manage to get the race in, awards distributed, and Sandy and I were home before the deluge hit (we must count our blessings, no matter how small). All in all this was a really fun, local event benefiting a great cause. It will definitely be on our calendar for next year!
Please visit the LAWS website to learn more about these great folks. Maybe even consider a one-time or recurring donation to this very worthwhile cause. And if you are a resident of the Luling area, or are going to be in town for the Thump next year, you should mark your calendars and join us for the Thumpin’ 5K 2018!
